Employees and prospective job candidates are seeking wellness services in a benefits package. Basic healthcare coverage is not enough, as millions of Americans are regularly spending out-of-pocket cash for wellness services such as massage and fitness.
Offering wellness services in employee health packages is more than just a sign of being a progressive employer, or a company who values its employees. In the workplace, healthy employees contribute to:
         reduced absenteeism
         increased productivity
         enhanced morale and teamwork
However, some companies avoid offering wellness benefits because of a perceived high cost. This is not necessarily true. There are many ways to keep costs down and offer employees a progressive wellness plan.
One option is to seek wellness providers who offer corporate rates and discounts. Like any other benefits, wellness services may be available at special group rates. Ask your local practitioners and find those who want to work within your budget.
As you decide which services to offer, consider your current packages and your employees’ needs. If you have fewer than 10 employees, it is likely that you know some of your staff’s health habits and concerns. Some employees might prefer a beefier wellness package and reduced healthcare coverage. Your current offerings might be outdated, or inappropriate for your employees.
Do you offer a service that you can trade? Or products that you can barter? Many wellness practitioners are also small business owners. Many are negotiable. If you offer a valuable service to them, such as advertising or accounting, you may be able to trade services at little or reduced cost to you, the employer.
A few words of caution as you enter into any agreements with wellness providers. Like any other business, have a formal agreement so that each party knows what is expected of them and is held accountable. Although you and your wellness providers may both be coming from small business, and small-budget, backgrounds, be considerate of their time and efforts and do not try to undercut their fees. Being cheap or inconsiderate creates tension, which will ultimately result in poorer care for your employees.
In your efforts to be progressive and caring for your employees, establish solid relationships with wellness practitioners in your area. Learn which services your employees would use and appreciate.
To optimize your limited resources, be efficient. You can offer wellness benefits on a small budget.
