Going Green has never been more popular.  A recent google search of "going green" returned over 5,700,000 results! Within those results are very useful tips and tactics to help reduce the environmental impact of our business practices.

What we need is a specific, detailed plan that will be sustained in our organizations and embraced by our employees. In organizations that have the resources to take the time, here are my suggestions to get started:

1) Collect Information.  Understand what your current level of waste is and what it derived from. Is there any room for improvement? Can the improvements be sustained? Is it a realistic expectation to ask of employees and have them complete their other tasks?

2) Think outside the box for reuse of materials: My favorite example is a restaurant owner who reuses vegetable oil from his fryers to fuel his adapted vehicle. Years ago I paid a hauler over $100 a month to remove grease, now savvy operators are fueling their vehicles- saving money and helping the environment.

3)  Ask your vendors for their assistance. Often trash haulers are thought of as people that take the trash away. While true, they are also industry experts that can offer suggestions that they have experienced with other clients.

4)  Ask employees for their ideas! You want an idea that will have an impact and be embraced? Have it come from someone in the trenches. How about "bring your lunch to work day"? People will not travel out to lunch and if they use a reuseable container, this will reduce waste and most likely will be healthier.

There are endless steps and ideas that can have a positive impact on any organization. I focus mainly on the positive impact on your bottom line because I believe this is critical in sustaining the effort. The challenge often is, finding the time and resources to effectively implement these changes while running your business and dealing with day to day business.
