The Tyan rackmount chassis is one of the flagship products of the Tyan Business Group. Tyan and its parent company MiTAC make a wide variety of server quality cases, boards and cards. The company is well-known as a rackmount producer, both for itself and as an OEM.

Tyan rackmount chassis come in two basic varieties. The most common style cases they produce are the 1U cases. They are also the standard measurement for a rackmount system, as they occupy “1 Unit” of space. They other primary type is the 4U form factor. These occupy “4 Units” of space and come in full and half-rack varieties (which determines whether you need to put them next to each other or on top of one another). Think about the following when looking over a Tyan rackmount chassis list:

1. You can find Tyan rackmount chassis information on the Tyan website.

2. The most common style of Tyan rackmount chassis is the 1U.

3. Some companies also carry a small number of the 4U systems.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Research a Tyan rackmount chassis on their website.

Tyan's website has a lot of information about their products. Since being purchased by MiTAC, the companies' product lines have merged to the point where you can find MiTAC brand products made by, or at least very compatible with, Tyan.

I recommend: The Tyan website has a comprehensive listing of all of the current and past server models. Information on Tyan compatible systems is available on the MiTAC website. Both websites have a great deal of information on the specifications and mountings of the various chassis styles so you can ensure they will work with your current server set-up.

Find a Tyan rackmount chassis provider that sells 1U cases

Nearly every Tyan outlet carries 1U cases. This form factor is the most common style of rackmount chassis on the market today. They are often called "pizza boxes" because of their large flat construction. Tyan makes a wide range of styles built to accommodate several processor types from both AMD and Intel.

I recommend: Newegg and Provantage sell several varieties of Tyan 1U cases. Newegg’s entries are especially nice since they may have full reviews written by people that have purchased that specific case in the past.

Locate a company that sells a 4U Tyan rackmount chassis

The Tyan 4U is much less common then the 1U, so your retailer choice is more limited. The 4U case is usually used when a specific piece of hardware is too large to fit inside the slim 1U rackmount system. Most Tyan 4U cases are full racks so they take up the entire four units of space.

I recommend: You can purchase 4U cases at Atacom and EXcaliburPC. Both of these companies also sell 1U cases, as do most online retailers that sell 4U rackmount chassis.

Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • As you search for Tyan rackmount chassis, you'll come across several systems labeled "Tyan Compatible." These are not made by the Tyan Corporation but will accommodate their boards and cards. Some of these systems are made by MiTAC, other companies owned by MiTAC or are OEM parts that were originally made by MiTAC. Keep this in mind as any problems with the order or technical support will have to go through the original company rather than Tyan.
