We long ago evolved past the need to manually change the settings on our appliances with the advent of remote controls. The standard product that everyone is familiar with is the TV remote control, but remotes are now used with and seen as a necessity for every appliance we own: radios, stereos, VCR and DVD players.

The majority of remotes use infrared light signals to communicate. The TV remote control is an example of an infrared remote. Other devices we use operate by radio remote control, using radio frequencies to communicate between remote and appliance. Most mobile toys like remote control cars use a radio remote control rather than infrared remote controls.

With so many of our electric appliances using remotes these days, it’s possible to have six different remotes lying around the house and have no clue what each one is used for. If you’re facing this dilemma, purchase a single universal remote, which can control multiple electrical appliances. If you need a new remote control, here are some things to think about before purchasing:
  1. Ease of use. Does the remote control have tiny buttons, is it too complicated?
  2. Universal operability. Can it be used for multiple appliances?
  3. Make sure it is works with the appliance for which you’re purchasing it.

Find replacement remote controls

Sometimes the original remote for your TV or VCR falls and breaks, or all of the numbers wear off it and you can no longer tell which button controls the volume and which one changes the channel. If you're already comfortable with your old remote and don't want to buy a generic or universal remote to replace the old one, find a business that sells wholesale TV remote controls for any original model.

I recommend: New Remotes holds over 250,000 remotes in stock for dozens of brands of TV or VCR remote controls.  Mr. Remote Controls sells dozens of brands of TV, VCR and DVD remote controls at discount prices and offers a return policy on all unsatisfactory remote controls. Remotes.com lets you search for your original remote by the model number, part number, or number on the remote so you can easily identify the original replacement you need.

Find universal remote controls that eliminate the need for multiple remotes

It's always frustrating to sit down to watch TV and find five different remotes in front of you, none of them the one you need. Universal remote controls can operate multiple electric appliances so you no longer need to have half a dozen remotes cluttering your living room.

I recommend: The Logitech Harmony universal remote controls over 225,000 devices and comes in many different styles depending on your specific needs.  It doesn’t have too many buttons or special features so you’ll be able to use it without getting confused.

Find the remote that will keep you comfortable

Besides entertainment systems, remotes can also control air conditioning and heating units. Keep your indoor climate controlled without getting up and changing the thermostat by finding the right remote control.

I recommend: King Wins Technology offers a wide variety of universal remotes as well as infrared and radio remote controls that work on your air conditioning system.
