When maintaining, testing or repairing pipelines, pipe plugs (sometimes called sewer plugs or pipe test plugs) are indispensable. They clear pipes so you can see where problems are, make it easier to make needed repairs, and generally make the workplace safer for your employees. In fact, you'll waste time, money and resources if you try to work on pipelines without a pipe bypass plug.

There are a wide variety of pipe plug manufacturers and distributors, and at least as many types of pipe plugs. When calculating which is best for your current job, consider the following:

1. Inflatable pipe plugs for ease of use

2. Mechanical pipe plugs when air is not available

3. Custom pipe plugs when standard plug sizes won't work

Find the right inflatable pipe plug

Inflatable pipe plugs are just what they sound like: plugs that inflate with air to seal a pipe (usually water or sewer). Known for being easy to install, they are ideal for testing, repair and maintenance of pipelines.

I recommend: New Pig carries inflatable pipe plugs suitable for storm water systems and spill barriers. Mechanical Research & Design sells inflatable plugs for applications up to 5000 PSIG with ranges of 1/2 inches to 144 inches. Pipeline Equipment & Service Company offers inflatable test-ball plugs, muni-ball plugs, "gas bags" and more. Perma-Type Rubber offers a variety of inflatable pipe plugs for oil, gas or water pipelines.

Select a mechanical industrial pipe plug for low or high pressure

Mechanical pipe plugs are frequently used for concrete, clay and some types of plastic pipe. They are affordable and ideal for long-term use. To seal them, simply hand-crank into place to achieve a perfect fit.

I recommend: Savatech sells high-pressure pipe plugs, as well as a variety of other types of pipe plugs. Newman Tools offers both high- and low-pressure mechanical pipe plugs. Lansas Products offers a wide variety of mechanical pipe plugs. Drill Spot carries abs pipe air plugs. Smith Fastener Company sells a range of brass pipe plugs.

Buy custom pipe plugs

Sometimes standard pipe plugs won't suit your needs. When that happens, there are a variety of companies that can make custom plugs from a wide variety of materials for your job.

I recommend: Petersen Products carries a large stock of pipe plugs, including custom inflatable pipe plugs. Brooks Millwork Company creates custom redwood pipe plugs from 1/2 inch to 6 inches. Power Products Sales & Service provides custom plugs from almost any material.
