Over the 13 years I have been in the business I have seen many people attempt to market a product or service online only to fail. They may purchase some so called "guaranteed traffic" and to find out that this traffic that they thought would result in sales actually resulted in useless clicks to the site that they were marketing.
I have also seen small businesses try to figure out how to tackle pay per click advertising without knowing the first thing on how to effecitively bid on words and phrases. Meanwhile they end up spending money without getting the ROI they had hoped for.
The fact is that small business owners think that they have to do it themselves. Why you ask? Because that is how the small business owner has become succesful. They do everything from taking out the trash to negotiating deals that bring them great profit.
Business owners that do not have the resources to bring in a high priced ad agency or hire an in house person to do all the online marketing for them eventually convince themselves that the Internet is not for them and they focus on traditional means of advertising such as print and radio.
The fact is that Internet advertising if done correctly can be very effective and for not as much as someone would think. If they understood things like back linking or buying text links to improve search engine rankings or better yet understood how a splash page can drive great converting traffic to a website they would feel much better about online advertising.
The solutions can be found but beware of the so called consultant charging an arm and a leg to get this done for you. To better understand online marketing simply do some research and make sure that the person who you end up hiring will not over promise and under deliver.
