The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Scout out New York City newspapers

New York City is the media capital of the world, and its newspapers can help you find the best ways to advertise your business, find real estate for it, or see how you match up to the competition.

I recommend: The New York Daily News is one of New York City's largest newspapers, with a great Money/Business section and a website that lists news by borough. While the NY Post is more of a tabloid newspaper, the NY Post does provide great substance in its business section with a witty writing style. New York Magazine offers a great online visitors guide to the city. The Wall Street Journal--arguably the flagship business newspaper of the country--offers a great Markets Data Center where you can get market news and perform research online.

Learn about other areas of the state through newspapers

While those who call New York City their hometown stereotypically balk at the idea of civilization north of the five boroughs, it's there--and many area newspapers can help you get a feel for these areas.

I recommend: The Albany Times Union, the largest newspaper in the Capital Region of New York state (located just over 200 miles north of New York City), offers numerous blogs and a communities webpage with news and information tailored to the region's many towns. If you're looking west of the Albany Times Union's headquarters into the Central or Western areas of New York, try the Syracuse Post-Standard for numerous editions based on location, or the Buffalo News for its local business section. For news out of the state's Adirondack Region, try the Post Star or the Plattsburgh Press Republican.

Utilize online newspaper resources

From weather to real estate, every newspaper website can help you get a snapshot of the state. In addition, they can give you an idea of the type of employable talent in the area.

I recommend: American City Business Journals provides great in-depth business news by company for both the Albany and Buffalo markets. The New York Times' in-depth Real Estate section can help you scope out a great business space or help you and your employees find a new place to call home.
