Microcontrollers, or MCUs, are fully functional computer systems in chip form with memory and programmable peripherals built around a central core processor. Microcontroller units are fully functional compared to a microprocessor unit that has the limited functionality of a CPU only. Electronic microcontrollers include the standard logic and arithmetic algorithms of a generalized microprocessor together with data storage read-write memory, permanent data storage flash memory, program storage read-only memory, input and output interfaces, and peripherals. Microcontrollers are perfect for battery operated applications because they operate at lower speeds than microprocessors, approximately 32KHz and use very little power.

Microcontrollers automatically control applications such as remote controls, appliances, toys, office equipment, power tools and auto engines. The combined operating elements of the microcontroller shrinks the cost, size and power usage of systems that require separate input and output elements, memory and a central microprocessor. MCUs make products physically possible and economically viable purchases for mass market consumers.

1. Understand the microcontroller industry and market demands.

2. Buy from a tried and true microcontroller manufacturer.

3. Stay current on emerging electronic microcontrollers and programmable microcontroller technologies.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Know which microcontrollers are best for your inventory

Stay up-to-date with the electronic microcontroller market. Keep an eye on industry leaders and innovators to provide customers with what they want today and what they'll want tomorrow.

I recommend: Microcontroller.com bills itself as "the original embedded systems news website," and is crammed full of industry news and up-to-the-minute microcontroller market data to help you stay on top of what is selling now and what will be the next big thing in microcontroller tech. Get an in-depth report on the microcontroller market from Emitt Solutions.

Buy programmable microcontrollers and electronic microcontrollers from reliable manufacturers

Familiarize yourself with the numerous microcontroller manufacturers and their products. Many microcontroller manufacturers supply proprietary technology you can access through sales agreements and minimum purchases.

I recommend: Microchip is a microcontroller manufacturer of two different sets of 16 bit microcontrollers and two different 16 bit digital signal controller sets. They provide versatility and compatibility across a range of price and performance options. Microcontroller Pros is a distributor of several different microcontroller manufacturers and offers a variety of products.

Stay in the know with microcontroller manufacturers and their emerging technologies

Manufacturers of MCUs want to stay ahead of market demand and produce tomorrow's high demand technology. Organizing into professional associations helps them do just that. Microelectronic professional associations provide a wealth of information about microcontroller units and information about both U.S. and international microcontroller manufacturers.

I recommend: MIG, or Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Industry Group, is an organization comprised of MEMS manufacturers and distributors with the goal of making money in the MEMS market. MIG industry group and news are full of press releases and announcements about emerging technologies in MEMS technology. The Embedded Technology Journal presents global trends in embedded technology. The Journal's site includes resources, employment opportunities, forums and webcasts in addition to the articles and archives about new and emerging embedded microcontroller technology.
