The laws of Iowa stem from a state constitution that was passed over 150 years ago, when Iowa first became a state. Since that time, Iowa courts and legislative bodies have produced a well-developed and respected body of case law and statutes.

The laws of Iowa are focused more on agriculture than other states, which is understandable considering the importance of that industry to the state. Iowa's court system consists of a State Court of Appeals and a State Supreme Court as the final appellate authority.

You should know:

1. Iowa has one of the best reputations of any state for the ethics of its legal system. Reports of corruption are very rare.

2.  Although Des Moines is Iowa's biggest city and capital, it does not dominate the state. Iowa law firms are spread throughout the state.

3.   Iowa is known as a good state in which to do business. Small businesses are particularly important in Iowa, representing 95 percent of all jobs in the state.
