As the weather gets warmer everyone begins to think of activities they can complete outdoors. Whether they are physically active and like to run, hike, play sports or are more interested in less strenuous pursuits like fishing, sunning themselves, reading under a tree, they still are thinking of the outdoors. This makes for long stares out the window, slower walking into the building and a general sense of  malaise.

As company managers wrack their brains on ways to encourage and recognize their employees promotional giveaways that relate to this outdoor theme are very effective. These giveaways are an inexpensive way to show the employees that you are rewarding their positive performance and recognizing the general spirit of the season. Ultimately as managers you are interested in completing the necessary work on time, under budget and happy employees make better products and have less problems in the workplace.

According to Jim Collins, author of "Built to Last" in a monograph he produced for Stanford University "Most businesses also have a desperate need for greater discipline. Mediocre companies rarely display the relentless culture of discipline-disciplined people who engage in disciplined thought and who take disciplined action-that we find in truly great companies. A culture of discipline is not a principle of business; it is a principle of greatness.

This culture of discipline as the key to any successful business gives  a company one more key to making their business great. How does a business create a culture of discipline and still reward their employees for a job well done? This culture of discipline can seem onerous without a viable system of rewards to reinforce positive behavior. Everyone wants to be recognized. A simple pat on the back, or a smile from a manager can do wonders to facilitate a happy employee. When an employee shows extra effort a small certificate of recognition can be an effective tool to let them know that you recognize their efforts for the company.  Again, promotional giveaways that are related to competition between departments or sections are a great way to obtain the desired result; better, timely, under budget products and services to your clients.

Allowing your employees to form small committees to facilitate friendly competitions within the culture of discipline could be well supported by management and as another method of encouraging employees to work smarter and keep them from falling into the blase attitude of the coming warmer season.

These competitions are specific to your business and need to be monitored to determine the impact on the business.  If your employees are spending more time on the competition then on their work then they are defeating the purpose of the competition. Careful managerial participation is one way to allow the competition to continue effectively and within the stated goal of increasing the general positive attitude without impacting the business.

As a reward for the successful completion of these competitions promotional outdoor giveaways provide a good reward. Some suggestions of these gifts are beach towels, sun visors, folding chairs, backpack umbrellas, and cooler beach chairs.

These promotional items are an expense to the company yet when balanced with the increased productivity they are well worth the initial outlay of funds. Several companies offer these items inexpensively and boost the participation and enjoyment of the employees for their workplace and the job at hand - which is - making a profit, good customer relations, and good products or services.
