The first thing you need to do is to ask yourself: What do you like to do? One of the most popular and
insightful motivational quotes I know is:
“
If you like what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.”
So figure that out first -- the thing you like to do
so much, that you can easily say "I
enjoy this".
The next step is to
build a community of
participants. People and/or companies (etc.) who /that
complete the
story about what it is you
choose to do. Here's an example, if you are an
automobile mechanic and you like to
repair cars, then the participants are the people who drive cars and/or design/build cars. Now to
expand this community
online, you need to think more about information than the cars themselves -- what specialized
knowledge do you have about this
stuff? What is the USP ("unique selling proposition") that best describes your expertise and/or that tells other people why they should contact
you because
you are the expert
in this field? Let's stay with the same example -- and I'll add some more examples:
- a car enthusiast may be looking for information about repair manuals -- if you have experience with and/or expertise in how to get the best information out of such technical manuals, then perhaps you could offer this "translation" of technical writing into ordinary language
- a traveler may be looking for information about auto mechanics in your neighborhood -- since you "know the territory", it should be easy for you to act as a expert / professional guide for them to find exactly what they need.
It is important to realize that community participation is desired (as in "help wanted") by participants -- in other words: these people
want to meet each other! So there is ample
demand for such "meetups" to happen. And this is where you, the expert, are
pivotal. Again: you USP is that
you are better able to make the connections than anyone else.
Now to whom will you
sell this? Here it is perhaps wise to look at the flow of cash that is going on, in order to focus on who might be able to
pay for the service. In any exchange between participants, who is going to be receiving money for the exchange of goods/services/etc.? That is the person/company that you need to "sell" to -- you are providing them an opportunity to earn revenue, and that is an opportunity they will most likely be willing to pay for.
One final word of caution (perhaps this will be discussed in more detail in a future guide): it is your
expertise that you are selling -- and therefore that should be the primary
focus of your attention (in other words, you should not run the risk of selling yourself short by posting low quilty "cheap" ads advertising totally unrelated products / services and/or products / services of dubious quality -- otherwise your
high quality resource will of little value in no time).
