Continuing Education is an important aspect of being a Human Resources Professional. Laws, Guidelines, and Best practices are constantly changing, and all Certified HR Professionals are required to be re-certified every three years.

The re-certification process requires that individuals accumulate sixty credit hours through HR related continuing education activities. Re-certification is important because it allows you to be up to date on all HR practices, laws and guidelines, and it also shows that you are dedicated to your profession and the future of your career.

Be Aware of When You Need to Re-Certify

All certified HR Professionals need to be re-certified every three years. Be aware of important dates to ensure that you do not miss the opportunity to re-certify, and thus allow your certification to expire.

I recommend: The HR Certification Institute (HRCI) is an excellent place to track your certification expiration date. Their website, www.hrci.org , is an excellent resource and when you register for an online profile you have the ability to track your certification requirements.

Complete a Minimum of Sixty Credit Hours of HR Related Courses

In order to be eligible for re-certification, an individual must complete sixty credit hours of HR related courses or activities. This ensures that the individual is up to date on all current happenings in HR. One easy way to do this, is to break up the sixty credit hours, and do twenty credit hours each year.

I recommend: Online re-certification courses allow you to maintain flexibility, and attend courses when it is convenient for you, well at the same time providing you with quality education. Upcoming courses are being offered by HRSentry and Champlain College. Courses beginning on June 25, 2010 include: Preventing Discrimination in Hiring and Managing Employees and What You Must Know About Equal Opportunity in Employment under the Law.

Additional courses will be offered beginning in August, and September. Each of these courses is a chance to earn 20 credit hours for re-certification. For more information about these workshops check out HRSentry or Champlain College.

Apply For Re-Certification

Once you have completed all sixty credit hours, it is time to apply for your re-certification.

I recommend:  HRCI allows Certified HR Professionals to renew their certification online. It also allows users to track their certification related activities on their online profile. This is the easiest way to apply for re-certification, and can be done at HRCI's website.
