The American workplace has a serious problem and it is hitting companies just like yours right in the wallet. Many workers are out of shape, and the financial burden they’re placing on companies is getting heavier by the minute. Because these out of shape employees have more health problems, their insurance premiums cost more than their healthy counterparts. This is especially true for overweight workers as well. They fall victim to expensive injuries. They take a lot of sick days. When they are at work, they’re less productive than they would be if they were fit, healthy, and—yes—happy. How do we solve this problem? By promoting a healthy life style in the workplace you can make a difference. Studies show that workers who are more active report having higher productivity and a more positive attitude during the work day. With healthy employees come lower insurance premiums, as well.

Action Steps
The best contacts and resources to help you get it done

Keep track of your efforts

Encourage ALL employees to keep a daily activity log. Not only will this let them keep track of their exercise, it will also serve as motivation and a reminder to exercise.

I recommend: Here is a good chart you can use to track your activities: http://www.healthybodyweight.com/files/Tools/GilliamDailyPhysicalActivityLog.pdf?53L3c73d=1673

Some things to do at work

Schedule regular breaks for your employees and encourage them to go for walks outside. Offer healthy snack alternatives in the break room. Spread the word about events such as walk-a-thons and other activities. Get your company involved.

Tips & Tactics
Helpful advice for making the most of this Guide

  • Education is the key for weight maintenance and loss: Knowledge works. People choose questionable quick fixes regarding their body weight because they don’t understand how their bodies function or the role of exercise and good nutrition. Once a person has a good foundation and understanding of these critical components to preventing obesity and related diseases, he or she will make positive lifestyle changes that yield lifetime benefits.
  • Include exercise programs: Employees will benefit from daily physical activity. It will give them a boost in energy, productivity, and a positive feeling about their company showing them that you value them as employees.
