As the times change and the workforce evolves, college degrees have become more desirable--necessary, even--than ever. Careers that once required high school diplomas now require bachelor degrees, and where once you could get by on a bachelor degree, employers are now looking for Masters. College graduates statistically earn more per year, and are presented with a greater variety of opportunities that those without may miss. So what can you do? The choice is clear: go back and get that college degree. It's more than just a career-booster--it can be a boost to your self-confidence, as well, and the connections you make and the lessons you learn can stay with you for a life time.

When it comes to advancing your education, your options can be so limitless to the point of being daunting. With so many choices, why pick an online degree? There are several unique properties of this route that can make it a strikingly appealing pick.

  • Study on Your Own Schedule Rigid daytime class schedules and extra time out of the day to travel to and from campus can make it impossible for someone with a full-time job to succeed in your average college. With an online education, however, you are the one calling the shots. Schedule school around your career, and make both of them work for you.
  • Learn at Your Own Pace Contrary to what massive classrooms might have you believe, students do not all learn at their own pace. It’s all well enough for fast learners, but a slower pace or even a fast pace with one missed class during work travel or office crunch time can make all the difference in keeping up or falling behind and giving up. An online education gives you the power to study at your own speed and really absorb that knowledge without the stress of hard and fast deadlines.
  • Show Off Your Motivation Nothing says "take charge personality" quite like getting things done of your own accord, and nothing says "getting things done of your own accord" quite like taking it into your own hands to get that degree. With an online degree especially, you are proving a strong sense of self-motivation, determination, and a quest to excel--all of which are traits that are valued by any respectable employer.
So, now that you know the benefits of an online degree, how can you go about getting one? It's easier than you might think!
  • Make Sure Your Credentials Are In Order Just because we say "it's easier than you might think," don't take it too easy--one does not simply walk into online college. What you need, however, depends on where you are starting. A high school diploma is mandatory, so if that is an obstacle then you may need to look into a GED program before continuing. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are enhancing a bachelor or master degree through a specialized higher level degree, be sure to get your GRE or MCAT or GMAT completed and in order (perhaps making good use of some test preparation ahead of time), not to mention your transcripts with any transferrable credits.
  • Do Your Research on Colleges Just like traditional colleges, not all online colleges are the same. Some are vocational, while others offer more liberal arts options, so the degree you intend to get (and the career field you intend to go into) can be major deciding factors in where you take your classes. Another important thing to look for: accreditation. There are so many colleges online, but it is vital to make sure that the one you pick is certified by a major accreditation board. What this means is that a board of directors has rigorously reviewed the school and deemed it sufficient in upholding national standards of education and quality. The process may seem arbitrary, but with the amount of diploma mills out there (shady "institutions" that sell degrees with no coursework) it is a necessary action. Most employers--and other colleges, should you decide to transfer or pursue a higher level degree later on--will consider a degree from an unaccredited school to be invalid, and pressing ahead with one anyway can be a very costly mistake.
  • Adopt a Game Plan When you aren't being held to a strict school schedule and your other life priorities like work and family start knocking, it can be all too easy to slip into a procrastinating state of mind where your school work is concerned. Now is the time to start building good time management strategy habits. For instance, try carving out a few designated hours throughout of the week to make sure your work gets done. Make a comfortable workstation--whether in your bedroom or your study or your garage--where you can be assured some piece and quiet and access to all the class resources you need. Develop some good organization and time management habits now, and it will go a long way once you get started with your courses.
Preparation is one of the major keys to success; proper education is another. By preparing well for education, you are putting yourself two steps closer to a more fulfilling career path. Good luck!
